SACRED BRITAIN: Martyrs, Visions, Rebellions, Puritans - Holy Queens

Duration 9 nights/10 days

Day 1

Arrive London and make your way to your hotel. Rest, relax and independent sightseeing. Plan on an early dinner. Overnight London (1 night).

Day 2

Bury St Edmunds GardensTake the motorway out of London and travel through Haverhill to Bury St. Edmunds where Brother Jocelyn will take you on a special tour of the cathedral set in the renowned gardens of the ruined abbey. Overnight Bury St. Edmunds (3 nights), burial place of the martyr king.

Day 3

From this base to Norwich for an in depth tour of the city, the proud possessor of one of England's most beautiful cathedrals, some 30 medieval churches, and a fascinating Huguenot Heritage.

Day 4

A leisurely journey to Walsingham, a medieval place and now increasingly important modern place of pilgrimage noted for the shrine of the Virgin Mary, founded in the 11th century. The Augustinian friary and Franciscan priory are later additions. The route will also include the ruins of the 11th century Saxon cathedral at North Elmham and the site of the 7th nunnery established at East Dereham by St. Withburga. Meet the extraordinary holy royal queens who helped make England Christian.

Day 5

Passing through areas that saw a lot of action in the time of Sir Oliver Cromwell, to Cambridge for a special walking tour of the University Colleges and some free time. Overnight Cambridge (1 night). Explore this center of Puritan power and its contribution to Britain today.

Day 6

After a leisurely start, to Ely. Ely Cathedral Lantern TowerSt. Etheldreda founded an abbey here in AD670 and the Norman cathedral being built in 1083. The story of stained glass from medieval to modern times is well told here. On then through Boston and tales of the Pilgrim Fathers, to Lincoln for a late afternoon visit and choral evensong in the magnificent cathedral. Overnight Lincoln (1 night).

Day 7

The journey south takes in Navenby, a quaint village of stone and pan tiled houses surrounding the church of St. Peter; the grand church of St. Denys and the Bishop of Lincoln's Palace in Sleaford; the village churches in Threekingham, Sempingham and Bourne, the home town of fenland hero, Hereward the Wake. Overnight Peterborough. Meet local saints who founded abbeys, heroic resistance fighters from the Saxons.

Day 8

Two outstanding cathedrals see you on your way to London. Firstly, in Peterborough itself, home to one of England's finest Norman buildings, and finally the great cathedral in St. Albans, before reaching your centrally located hotel.

Day 9

Free day at leisure in London.

SACRED BRITAIN: From Stone Age, through the Age of Saints, to the Present Day

Day 1

Rendezvous in London. Independent transfers to your hotel. Rest and relax. Plan an early dinner and overnight London (1 night).

Day 2

Depart London taking the fast route to Amesbury and visits to the Neolithic ceremonial and religious site at Woodhenge, and of course Stonehenge. On then to Old Sarum built around Salisbury Cathedral and Autumn Colors500 BC and the former site of the first cathedral and ancient city of Salisbury. Late afternoon visit to the present Salisbury Cathedral and choral evensong. Overnight Salisbury (1 night).

Day 3

Traveling through Shaftesbury and Frome, you reach Glastonbury where a special tour of the Abbey, burial place of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere, can be arranged. A tour of Wells Cathedral and choral evensong conclude the day. Overnight Bath (1 night).

Day 4

With a morning at leisure in Bath, you now head over the border into Wales where a special tour of the reconstructed farmhouses, cottages, chapels and other buildings will give you a good insight into the life and culture of Wales. Overnight Cardiff.

Day 5

Your pilgrimage will begin with a visit to Llandaff Cathedral, the oldest in the British Isles before continuing west to the 12th century ruined abbeys at Margam and at Neath. Overnight in St Davids (2 nights).

Day 6

Full day in and around St. Davids with a boat trip to Ramsey Island created in legend by Breton Saint, Justinian, who axed it from the mainland to ensure solitude. Special tours also of St. Davids Bishop's Palace, the most impressive in Wales, and St. Davids Cathedral, the premier cathedral in Wales in Britain's smallest city, by Royal Charter in 1994.

Day 7

Something rather special today, a boat ride to Caldey Island. Inhabited since the Stone Age, Caldey has been the home of monks since Celtic times. It is now owned by monks of the Cistercian order. Having explored the churches and Old Priory, return to the mainland for the fast motorway journey east, making a brief detour up the Wye Valley to see Tintern Abbey which ranks among one of Britain's most beautiful and historic sites. Continue on to Pershore for the night.

Day 8

Depart Pershore for Oxford and a walking tour of the Colleges and some 'browsing' time before heading into London.

Day 9

Free day at leisure in London.

SACRED BRITAIN: Warriors, Romans & Saints

Day 1

Begin in Glasgow. Rest, relax and independent sightseeing. Mid-afternoon visit to the St. Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art. Sample one of the many magnificent restaurants for dinner this evening. Overnight Glasgow (2 nights).

Day 2

Via Old Kilpatrick, reputedly the birthplace of St. Patrick of the Rock of Dumbarton, turning east at Loch Lomond to Stirling, the ancient capital of Scotland and closely linked to the legends surrounding Sir William Wallace, King Robert the Bruce, Rob Roy, and Bonnie Prince Charlie. Return to Glasgow.

Day 3

Traveling through Robbie Burns Country, pause at 13th century Crossraguel Abbey whose remarkably complete remains include the church, cloister, chapter house, and much of the domestic premises. On then to Whithorn Priory, part of the 'Whithorn, Cradle of Christianity' story. St NinianIt was founded as Candida Casa by St. Ninian in the early 15th century. The museum contains the Monreith Cross. Overnight Gatehouse of Fleet (1 night).

Day 4

The route to Carlisle can include stops at Cistercian Sweetheart Abbey founded in 1273 by Devorgilla in memory of her husband John Balliol; Caerlaveroch, one of Scotland's finest castles built on a triangular site; and Gretna Green where runaway couples could seek quick marriages under easy going Scottish law. Late afternoon tour of Carlisle Cathedral and choral evensong. Overnight Carlisle (1 night).

Day 5

Today your pilgrimage will follow Hadrian's Wall taking in Augustinian Lanercost Priory; the 5-acre fort at Housesteads which contains the well excavated remains of Roman granaries, barrack blocks and gateways; and Chesters, Britain's best preserved example of a Roman cavalry fort. Overnight Durham (3 nights).

Day 6

Today's circular tour will include the Church of St. Andrew in Bishop Auckland; picturesque Egglestone Abbey; the wall paintings at the Church of St. Agatha, Easby; ruined Jervaulx Abbey, attractively set on the banks of the River Ure; and Ripon Cathedral where the crypt shows evidence of a monastery on this site as early as AD669. The choir stalls and misericords (500 years old) are marvelous.

Day 7

Today's visits will focus on the area surrounding Jarrow and the Church of St. Paul where St Cuthbertthe present sanctuary is the Saxon Church of the monastery of the Venerable Bede. You will also visit the site of the 7th century monastery at Tynemouth, and the Benedictine monastery founded in AD674 which adjoins the Church of St. Peter Monkwearmouth. Return to Durham for a tour of the Norman cathedral, a World Heritage Site, burial place of the Venerable Bede and St. Cuthbert. Stay on for choral evensong.

Day 8

Taking the coastal route and taking note of the incoming tides, cross over to Holy Island where St. Aidan's monastery dates from AD634. Destroyed by Vikings, it was replaced in 1093 by a priory which is now a roofless ruin. It is one of the most important early centers of Christianity in Anglo Saxon England. Returning to the mainland, head for Edinburgh (2 nights).

Day 9

Morning tour of Edinburgh to include the imposing castle and St. Margaret's Chapel which remains from the 11th century. Afternoon at leisure. Be sure to plan a farewell Scotland dinner at one of Edinburgh’s famous restaurants.

SACRED BRITAIN: In the Footsteps of Chaucer, The Grail, and the Ancient Pre-Christian Peoples of Britain

Day 1

Begin in London. Independent transfers to your hotel. Rest and relax. Mid-afternoon visit to Westminster Abbey, coronation and burial place of English monarchs since the 11th century. Take this opportunity to try one of the trendy new restaurants for dinner tonight. Overnight London (1 night).

Day 2

Following a trail immortalized by Chaucer's Pilgrims from London to Canterbury, beginning at 12th century Southwark Cathedral. Travel via the Church of St George Gravesend, burial place of Princess Pocahontas; Rochester Cathedral founded by King Ethelbert in AD604; and to 13th century Aylesford Priory where you can stay for the next two nights.

Day 3

Continuing along the Pilgrim's Way to Canterbury where a special walking tour will include St. Augustine's Abbey, the majestic cathedral founded in AD597 where you will attend choral evensong. Return to Aylesford.

Day 4

Winchester Cathedral InteriorOn today's cross country route you will see the great early 12th century wall paintings at the little church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Chaldon, Guildford Cathedral consecrated in 1961, and picturesque Waverley Abbey, the first Cistercian Abbey founded in England (1128). Attend choral evensong in Winchester Cathedral. Overnight Winchester (1 night).

Day 5

Special tour of the longest cathedral in Europe including a private viewing of the famous Winchester Bibles and of nearby Winchester College (1382). Walk beside the River Itchen to the medieval Hospital of St. Cross where you will obtain Wayfarer's Dole from the Porter's Lodge. On then to Salisbury (1 night).

Day 6

Morning tour of the cathedral, the only English one built in the Middle Ages as a single conception. Follow this with a “step back in time” stroll around Old Sarum, the forerunner of modern Salisbury, the Neolithic ceremonial or religious site at Woodhenge and, of course, Stonehenge. Traveling through Shaftesbury and Frome to Wells, arriving in time for a tour of the beautiful cathedral, including choral evensong. Overnight Bath (2 nights).

Day 7

Special tour of Glastonbury Abbey, burial place of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere, and the Chalice Well. Afternoon at leisure in Roman Aquae Sulis, the modern day city of Bath.

Day 8

With a brief detour through the south west corner of the Cotswolds and stunning Gloucester Cathedral, to the fascinating Saxon Church of St. Mary at Deerhurst. On then to imposing Tewkesbury Abbey and a stroll around the ancient town reaching Worcester in time for a quick visit perhaps to Royal Worcester Porcelain, directly opposite Worcester Cathedral. Overnight Cheltenham (1 night). Gloucester Cathedral Interior

Day 9

Via Evesham to the remains of the once wealthy Hailes Abbey, a place of pilgrimage prior to the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Traveling through Burford to Oxford for a behind the scenes tour of the Oxford Colleges.

Day 10

Morning at leisure in Oxford before heading back to London.
